Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

If you are looking for a permanent long lasting restorative solution for your teeth, then you may be a good candidate for dental implants. Patients that have broken, injured, or missing teeth can benefit from dental implants. Implants are built to last, look and feel natural, and give patients a smile they can be proud of.

During our implant evaluation process we look to see if the patient is in good general or oral health. We also look to see if the patient has adequate bone in their jaw. The patient must have enough bone present in their jaw to provide the needed support for the implant.

Implants are connected with gum tissue and the bone in our mouth, so having enough bone present is important. If the patient does not have enough bone present, bone grafts can be done. This process involves adding bone grafting material to the area in need. X-rays are taken during your exam to help identify areas of bone loss, and to help to create a customized treatment plan.

A thorough medical evaluation is also done during the evaluation process. A patient’s health history can affect how well the implant will heal and fuse to the jaw bone. If you suffer from diabetes, uncontrolled gum disease, or other medical conditions, you may still be a good candidate.

Patients that take certain medications that suppress their immune system may not be a good candidate for dental implants. All of these conditions will be evaluated during our process to help develop the best course of treatment that works for you.

Most patients are good candidates for dental implants, but there are rare cases where dental implants may not be the best solution. Patients that have low jawbone density from trauma, congenital conditions, or tooth loss may not be good candidates for implants.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are the leading solution for patients seeking that natural looking smile. Implants are permanent, aesthetically pleasing, and feel like natural teeth.

Dental implants are highly durable and are built out of titanium. They are anchored to the bone rather than the tooth’s roots, and provide a sturdy base for one or many crowns. On average, dental implants last upwards of 25 years or a lifetime. Implants are a great choice for patients that want a long lasting restorative solution.

Dental implants are not only long lasting, but they provide other benefits to patients. Implants are very comfortable in the mouth, and allow patients to speak and eat easily. They function just like our natural teeth, and give patients the ability to live a normal lifestyle.

Patients that have missing, damaged, or broken teeth are good candidates for dental implants. We also require the patient to be in good general and oral health. The best candidates for implants have healthy gum tissue and do not suffer from periodontal disease.

Caring for dental implants is easy and similar to caring for your natural teeth. We recommend brushing and flossing daily with a low-abrasive tooth paste and soft bristle brush. Floss daily with an implant specific floss, and use a Waterpik water flosser to help get those hard to reach areas.

Additional benefits of dental implants:

  • There is no cleaning or soaking with dental implants. They are permanent and cannot be removed like with other restorative solutions.
  • Bone grafting can be done if the patient does not have adequate bone in the jaw to support the implants.
  • Dental implants provide long term value financially and rarely need to be replaced.
  • Implants give patients improved oral health
