Porcelain inlays and onlays are used when a tooth does not have enough damage present to require a crown, or the tooth does not have enough structure left for a filling. Inlays and Onlays are used to treat moderate levels of decay or damage. They are the color of our natural teeth and not only correct damage, but look natural.
Porcelain inlays and onlays help to restore and strengthen a damaged tooth to its normal function, and are custom made. They can be used to cover larger parts of a tooth, or a smaller area on a molar.
How does an Inlay or Onlay work?
Inlays and onlays usually require two appointments. The first appointment is used to prepare the damaged tooth and take impressions of your teeth. The impression is then sent out to a lab to create the custom inlay or onlay. We use temporary inlays or onlays until the permanent one is ready.
When the patient returns for the second appointment we remove the temporary inlay or onlay and the permanent inlay/onlay is cemented onto the tooth. We make the necessary adjustments to ensure the inlay or onlay fits perfectly. We also check to make sure the patient has the proper bite, and the inlay/onlay feels comfortable in the mouth.
