Wisdom Teeth Removal

When do wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Wisdom teeth erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. They are the last set of molars to erupt in the mouth, and when they erupt is different for every patient. Wisdom teeth can cause overcrowding for patients with a smaller mouth, and if they do not have enough room to erupt professional help is needed.

Part of our dental exam process is to monitor each patient’s wisdom teeth between the ages of 16 to 19 years old. We take x-rays to help us get a clear picture, and watch the wisdom teeth closely. If during an exam we notice the wisdom teeth are impacted, or causing issues with other permanent teeth, we may recommend they are removed. Most patients have their wisdom teeth removed between the ages of 17 and 25. If wisdom teeth are not addressed they can cause issues as we get older, and removing them helps to prevent issues in the future.

Common reasons why wisdom teeth are removed:

  • Wisdom teeth are causing pain in the gums or mouth
  • There is an infection present
  • Wisdom teeth are impacted or stuck underneath the gums and cannot erupt properly

The wisdom tooth removal process is relatively simple and only takes approximately 45 minutes. Nitrous oxide and local anesthesia are used in our office to help keep our patients relaxed, pain free, and comfortable during the surgery.

During the procedure, the gum tissue may need to be cut to help reach and remove the wisdom teeth. If needed, stitches are used that will dissolve a few days after the procedure. The area is packed with gauze pads to help with fluid, and the gauze can be removed shortly after the surgery is completed.

After wisdom tooth removal the patient needs to recover a bit in our office before they are sent home. We will discuss at home post-surgery instructions including how to care for your mouth after the procedure.

Patients may experience pain or sensitivity after the surgery, but this should subside after a few days. We require a friend or family member come with you to your procedure. This ensures you safely arrive home after the surgery.
